My Story

Growing up I found myself being pushed to go to a Kathak class, every weekend, by my mother. In my hometown of Purnia, we would ride in a cycle rickshaw to class, come rain or shine. And for a child my age, then 5, it was quite natural to miss going outside and playing with the other children or watch TV. Come weekend and I would start to throw my tantrums and crib about why I should not be going to a dance class. My mother would hear it all and yet persistently go back to the weekend routine of taking me to class.

About Me

My name is Nidhi Bhuwania Mittal. My journey with Kathak started at the age of 5 and has continued beyond my Masters’ Degree in Classical Dance. Having performed on stage since then till I completed graduation, my journey has taken different shapes and forms and each time I connect back with this space of dance I find true happiness within. So when life came back calling to me after a decade long break, to jump in, find my own space away from the roles I was playing as wife, daughter-in-law and a mother, I couldn’t think of anything but dance to be that space for me.

Today I own and run Studio Antara, which was launched in the year 2012. It is a creative space where dance, passion, knowledge and creativity come together and speak the language of Kathak and several other creative art forms.

I am on a mission to help children and adults find true happiness and express themselves by reconnecting with their creative self through dance.

Dance is my life, my space – to experience true bliss.

When you are a first born, you lack the presence of a role model sibling who cries and throws things to be heard and finally gets his / her way around things. My mother would patiently ride with me to every kathak class, with a promise of a samosa and gulab jamun treat on the way back. She made sure I also found some generous stage time during this learning ordeal. Before long I found myself going on stage in most school functions and public events as a show stopper – child artist.  My first teacher Birendra Ghosh, from Kala Bhavan in Purnia, taught me for almost 10 years, before I moved to Pilani for my higher classes.

It was not until one such stage performance which was followed with a shower of compliments that I realised, that my mother and aunt could see something in me which I did not at that time. That something was a flair for dance. I was good at it. As for me I enjoyed all the attention and the recognition and that became my motivation to go to class every week. Generous, genuine and kind compliments can go a long way in making one feel good. Luckily for me by the time compliments had faded, I had truly started enjoying my kathak classes and the stage time that made me happy. And so the journey that began at five took different shapes, forms and each time I’d connect back with this space of dance I found true happiness within. I know how it feels when you discover your true passion. Having performed on stage since then till I completed graduation, when life came back calling to me after a decade long break, to jump in, find my own space away from the roles I was playing as wife, daughter-in-law and a mother, I couldn’t think of anything but dance to be that space for me.

Dance is my life, my space – to experience true bliss.

And that is why I do what I do today. I help children and adults find true happiness and express themselves by reconnecting with their creative self through dance.
